SQUIRREL CONTROL IN NEW JERSEY
SQUIRREL REMOVAL AND CONTROL:
Squirrels are usually classified as a pest species due to their habits of living in houses. The most common complaints include the following:
· Squirrels living in the attic
· Squirrels living in the chimney
· Squirrels chewing on woodwork
· Squirrels stealing bird seed
· Squirrels stuck inside the wall structures of homes
SQUIRREL BIOLOGY:
Eastern Grey squirrel adults average about 16 ounces in weight. They can supposedly live for up to ten years, but in the wild the life expectancy isn’t more than 3-4 years. Squirrels produce about 2 litters per year which one is in the late summer, and one in the winter.
The female has a litter of 3-4 young after a 44 day gestation, and the young grow very quickly, and are weaned in about ten weeks.
SQUIRREL BEHAVIOR:
Squirrels are the most active in the morning and evening. Squirrels eat mostly nuts and seeds. They live in a variety of habitats, both forest and suburban or city areas. They establish home territories, and often communicate through chattering, scent, and flickering of their tail.
SQUIRRELS CAN BE A NUISANCE:
Squirrels love to live in attics. They also love to chew, and will chew on houses or wires, ducts, pipes once inside an attic. People don’t like the noises squirrels make running about above the ceiling or in the eaves, but its really the chewing that’s the real problem. If squirrels chew on electrical wires in an attic, it can create a real potential fire hazard. Squirrels also bring in nesting material and leave urine and feces.

SQUIRREL DAMAGE:
Eastern Grey Squirrels commonly enter houses either by chewing holes along the facia or in dormer corners, or by entering any existing gaps 1-2 inches in diameter. Once inside they may chew on electrical wiring or phone lines, displace or pack down and soil insulation, and make noise with their activities. The best way to rid squirrel problems is to first remove the problem squirrels by trapping and relocating and then patching holes to prevent further problems. Trimming any trees away from the house is also a good idea.
Squirrels occasionally damage lawns by burying or searching for and digging up nuts . They will chew bark and clip twigs on ornamental trees or shrubbery planted in yards. Often squirrels take food at bird feeders. Sometimes they chew to enlarge openings of bird houses and they enter to eat nestling songbirds. Flying squirrels are small enough to enter most bird houses and are especially likely to eat nesting birds.
In gardens, squirrels may eat planted seeds, mature fruits, or grains such as corn.

BROWN BAT CONTROL
In NEW JERSEY
WHAT ARE SOME IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT BATS?
· Contrary to popular belief, less than one percent of bats carry rabies and attacks by bats are extremely rare.
· Bats are the only truly flying mammals; they belong to the Order Chiropfera and are not rodents.
· All of the bats found in New Jersey are strictly insect eaters; a bat can consume hundreds of insects in an hour.
· Bats are not blind but they depend more on their sonar than eyesight to navigate, avoid obstacles, and capture insects. They almost never get tangled in peoples' hair.
· Some of our common bats congregate in colonies, often in buildings. These social bats usually return to the same roost year after year and start maternity colonies in the spring. The young are born in June and July.
· Bats are true hibernators and usually enter caves, mines, buildings, and even sewers in the fall to hibernate over winter.

Individual bats can live to be 30 years old; colonies can be present at the same location for over 100 years.
WHAT IF YOU ARE BITTEN, SCRATCHED OR MAY HAVE HAD CONTACT WITH A BAT?
Bats are not normally aggressive animals. However, caution should be used to avoid direct contact, even with apparently healthy bats. Unusual behavior, such as a bat fluttering on the floor, or a bat flying in midday, is reason for particular care to avoid all human or animal contact with the bat.
In recent years, bat associated strains of rabies have been the causative agent for the majority of the few human rabies cases in the United States. In some of these cases, rabies transmission occurred even after apparently limited contact with a bat. Because bat bites may be less severe, heal rapidly, and therefore, be more difficult to find or recognize than bites inflicted by larger mammals, rabies postexposure treatment should be considered for any physical contact with bats when bites, scratches, or mucous membrane contact with saliva cannot be excluded.
If you are bitten, or scratched or the possibility of contact can not be excluded, try to confine or kill the bat without damage to its head, to prevent additional exposures. Immediately cleanse the wound thoroughly with soap and water, and seek prompt medical attention from a physician or hospital emergency room. Report the bite or other exposure to your local health department as soon as possible. Using heavy protective gloves, tongs, or a shovel, place the bat in a coffee can or other securely covered container and arrange with your local health department for immediate delivery and testing at the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services Rabies Laboratory.
If your dog or cat is exposed to a bat, follow similar procedures in capturing the bat and contacting your local health department to report the incident and arrange for the testing of the bat. The greatest preventive measure is to have your dog or cat vaccinated against rabies before any exposure to a rabid animal.
For more information about bats and rabies control, contact your local health department.

WHICH BATS ENTER MY HOME?
Two kinds of bats in our area are often found roosting in colonies inside buildings, the big brown and little brown bats. Other bats, called solitary bats, do not usually enter buildings.
The big brown bat, large with a wingspread of about 14 inches, is our most common species. Colonies of up to 200 individuals return each spring to thousands of homes and other buildings in New Jersey. Although long-lived, reproduction is slow; only one or two young are born each year. If left undisturbed, a colony of bats will return to the same roost each spring for many years. The big brown bat accounts for over 75 percent of the bat contacts with people and pets and is the bat most often tested for rabies.
The little brown bat is also quite common in homes during the spring and summer, and large numbers hibernate in abandoned iron mines. However, the number of human and animal exposures, and the number of little brown bats found to be rabid, are much less than for the big brown bat.
HOW DO YOU GET RID OF BATS YOUR HOME?
The only permanent method to get rid of bats from a home and keep them out is to exclude them by bat-proofing. There are no chemicals registered in New Jersey for killing bats, and the use of unregistered pesticides only increases the chances that children and pets will came in contact with sick bats.
Bats often roost in dark, undisturbed areas, such as attics and wall spaces. The entry points are often near the roof edge, such as under the eaves, soffits or loose boards, openings in the roof or vents, or crevices around the chimney. Sometimes bats will roost behind shutters or under boards without entering the home. While the objective is to seal off all of the actual and potential bat entry points, care must be taken to follow the correct procedures to avoid blocking the bats inside the roost.

CARPENTER BEE CONTROL
In NEW JERSEY
WHAT ARE SOME IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT CARPENTER BEES
Hymenoptera: Anthophoridae, Xylocopa virginica
SIZE: Up to 1 1/2 inches (38mm)
COLOR: Dark-colored
DESCRIPTION: Carpenter bees are large bees, resembling bumble bees. They are heavy-bodied and metallic blue-black with green or purplish highlights. The bodies are covered with bright yellow or orange hairs.
HABITAT: These insects build their nests in wood siding, the ends of logs used in modern log houses, or other areas where bare or painted wood is exposed.
LIFE CYCLE: The males and females cut a one-half inch circular hole into the wood, then create a tunnel parallel to the surface of the wood. Within the tunnel the female stores food and lays eggs. The developing carpenter bee larvae are in individual cells in the tunnel. There is usually only one generation per year.
TYPE OF DAMAGE: Cut holes in wood; yellow sawdust containing waste materials leaves unsightly stains.
CONTROL: Control of these insects can be achieved by spraying the entrance hole with an aerosol insecticide and plugging it with wood putty to prevent adults from returning.
INTERESTING FACTS: Females are quite docile, although they can sting. Males are aggressive, but cannot sting.

In the late-spring and early summer, homeowners often notice large, black bees hovering around the outside of their homes. These are probably carpenter bees searching for mates and favorable sites to construct their nests. Male carpenter bees are quite aggressive, often hovering in front of people who are around the nests. The males are quite harmless, however, since they lack stingers. Female carpenter bees can inflict a painful sting but seldom will unless they are handled or molested.
Carpenter bees resemble bumble bees, but the upper surface of their abdomen is bare and shiny black; bumble bees have a hairy abdomen with at least some yellow markings.
Although carpenter bees are less aggressive than wasps, female bees provisioning their nests will sting. Treatment is best performed at night when the bees are less active, or while wearing protective clothing.

Carpenter bees overwinter as adults in wood within abandoned nest tunnels. They emerge in the spring, usually in April or May. After mating, the fertilized females excavate tunnels in wood and lay their eggs within a series of small cells. The cells are provisioned with a ball of pollen on which the larvae feed, emerging as adults in late summer. The entrance hole and tunnels are perfectly round and about the diameter of your finger. Coarse sawdust the color of fresh cut wood will often be present beneath the entry hole, and burrowing sounds may be heard from within the wood. Female carpenter bees may excavate new tunnels for egglaying, or enlarge and reuse old ones. The extent of damage to wood which has been utilized for nesting year after year may be considerable.
Carpenter bees prefer to attack wood which is bare, weathered and unpainted. Therefore, the best way to deter the bees is to paint all exposed wood surfaces, especially those which have a history of being attacked. Wood stains and preservatives are less reliable than painting, but will provide some degree of repellancy versus bare wood. To further discourage nesting, garages and outbuildings should be kept closed when carpenter bees are actively searching for nesting sites.
